How your emotional state affects the level of your game

Our site already has articles from Exan13 on the impact of negative emotions on the game: 6 main negative emotions that affect our lives.

The topic of emotions and poker are inextricably linked. Understanding the psychology of emotions is one of the foundations of your successful game.

After all, Tilt is nothing but manifestations of negative emotions. Fatigue when playing and loss of concentration are also associated with emotional state. Many believe that there is a direct connection between the emotional state and the level of play, when a negative state negatively affects the result, and a positive emotional state leads only to positive sessions. Is this really the case?

Let's take a closer look at what an emotional state is in general and what affects it. Emotional state is a complex mental state of reflection in the form of experiencing external and internal stimuli. In simple terms, it is the level of experience of all events that occur in a person's life. And this level of experience affects the stability of human behavior. In this case, it is not the degree of intensity of emotions that is important, but your ability to cope with them.

The world-famous researcher of higher human nervous activity i.p. Pavlov found a connection between the manifestations of emotions and reaction stereotypes of the nervous system. His works were continued by modern scientists, who revealed that human emotions are always determined by any actual need and an assessment of the probability (possibility) of its satisfaction. First of all, this applies to labor processes and the development of working dynamic stereotypes.

Reference: dynamic stereotype is a complex conditioned reflex reaction developed by repeated repetitions.

The value of a dynamic stereotype lies in its preparation (programming) of accurate, timely reactions of the body to familiar, similar situations without unnecessary expenditure of nervous energy. Reinforcement of the working dynamic stereotype in the form of a good organization of the workplace, the right combination of work and rest regimes, compliance with discipline causes positive emotions, a sense of satisfaction. In turn, the violation of the working dynamic stereotype in connection with adverse conditions causes negative emotions.

  • For example, the feeling that the probability of achieving the goal is small leads a person to negative emotions (fear, anxiety, anger, etc.), which he actively tries to minimize. Similarly, internal readiness for failure, being in a stable negative state, inhibits a person in developing and developing new strategies for behavior.

Thus, an unstable emotional state arises, which must be learned to overcome. It is also necessary to understand that an increase in the likelihood that the need will be satisfied (compared to the previous forecast) leads to positive emotions – anticipation, pleasure, joy, which any successful person seeks to maximize, i.e. strengthen, extend, repeat. This dependence is called the general pattern of human emotions. A positive emotional state is associated not only with emotions and their experience, but also with the ability to react and stabilize one's state, accumulate positive experiences, and be self-confident.

Achieving inner emotional stability leads us to further success.

In short – from everything! Any stimulus or stimulus leads to the appearance of emotions and destabilization of the emotional state. However, people who not only often face negative emotions, but also learn how to manage them, accumulate their emotional baggage, are able to better adapt to negative emotions. Usually, they are more successful in overcoming difficulties on their way, and in poker they are more emotionally stable and more often show positive results. Poker University psychologist Sofia Okhrimenko actively teaches emotional stability at her consultations.

We invite you to take a short test to determine your emotional state.

Evaluate each judgment by 1 point, if it is present in your life:

  1. Slowness of activity and sometimes uniformity of actions.
  2. Constant distraction from useful activities. Your actions are not aimed at working and developing discipline in gameplay, but at avoiding them (taking a break, drinking coffee or tea, chatting in instant messengers, etc.).
  3. Increased disinhibition and inflatedness. Any actions can irritate you, and you can feel the tension inside.
  4. Feeling that all forces have left you. There is no time and energy for one's own personal life (entertainment, recreation, family).
  5. You feel physically that something is wrong with your body. You may become sick more often or go to bed and feel pain in your back and your limbs. Do you feel any discomfort in your body that wasn't there before?

Results:

  1. 1-2 points - you have the resources to cope with difficulties, your emotional state is stable.
  2. 3 points - there is emotional instability, so there are fewer resources to cope with the difficulties.
  3. 4-5 points - there is a high degree of negative emotional state. Most likely, you are under stress and in the initial stage of the formation of emotional burnout. If you continue like this, your activities will not bring any results.
